Entrepreneur launches bar venture after funding boost

A North Yorkshire entrepreneur has been able to launch The Little Tanner bar in Northallerton with the help of startup funding from the Business Enterprise Fund.

Brian Simpson is no stranger to Northallerton, having launched the Tanner Hop bar in the town in 1994 and took on the Station Hotel in 1999 before moving abroad.

Now he is launching his latest venture on his return to North Yorkshire, a bar featuring live music from local bands and a selection of real ales.

Simpson said: “There’s a massive choice when it comes to local beer. From where we are I can pull in beers from Teesside, York and Ripon easily. We also received a commendation from CAMRA which I’m delighted at.” Brian said.

“It can be non-stop at the weekends, we’re one of the busiest places in town. I have 3 to run alongside me and my wife.”

The entrepreneur is considering launching a Thai food offering for the site, as well as keeping an eye out for a second bar.

BEF investment manager Julie Micklethwaite saw the potential in Brian’s venture. She said: “He clearly knew the industry and the area very well. Often small businesses need that financial boost to help get the ball rolling.”
