5 things I’ve learned running a business: Michael Sahota, MS Estates

Michael Sahota of Nottingham-based MS Estates shares the lessons he’s learned from running his own business.

Stay calm, composed and professional at all times

Not being able to control your emotions can affect your performance and ruin your credibility.

Pay your suppliers on time

If you don’t you risk damaging your reputation. Sometimes in times of need you may need credit and a supplier that you’ve had good business dealings with in the past may help.

You get what you pay for

This goes for everything from staff, services and anything that you need for your business. Don’t skimp on costs and do what you need to do properly so you don’t have to do it twice.

Lead by example and grab the bull by the horns

The ethics of the business are set by the leaders. If you are lazy and dishonest then you can’t expect any better from your staff. Always deal with problems head on, don’t procrastinate and take full responsibility. Be generous to your customers and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Work hard, work smart

Hard work is always rewarded, don’t be scared to put the hours in. have systems in place to assist your business and delegate. You can’t do everything.
