Hygiene firm flushed with pride at capital contract

The Lloyd's building

A Derby-based hygiene services company has completed a prestigious contract at the world-famous Lloyd’s building in London’s main financial district.

Hygiene Services Group (HSG) has installed an environmentally-friendly washroom water conservation system of its own design at the 14-storey Grade I listed building, which is home to insurance giant Lloyd’s of London.

After carrying out a detailed survey, the Pride Park-based firm installed 129 Ureco units and 53 Uretech water managers across the site for an undisclosed sum.

The Ureco has been designed to reduce the amount of water flushing through washroom urinals to just four flushes per day. Lloyd’s of London now uses 27,429 less litres of water a day, which will equate to a reduction of 7.1 million litres of water every year – saving the organisation nearly £15,000 a year in utility bills and reducing its annual carbon footprint by 7.5 tonnes of co2.

Ian Arthurs, technical services manager of corporate real estate at Lloyd’s of London, said: “I had already seen the benefits of HSG’s Ureco system at another major venue and was keen to replicate the environmental and washroom experience improvements at The Lloyd’s building.

“Now that we have addressed issues with blockages and odours, the feedback from colleagues and visitors alike has been very positive.

“Washroom water usage has dramatically improved and our environmental credentials have increased. Furthermore, maintenance call-outs and therefore costs have been cut.”

The Lloyds building is sometimes known as the inside-out building due to its radical architecture, which incorporates quirks such as ducts and lifts located on its exterior to maximise interior space.
