Plans for 22-storey tower shelved by developer

How the tower would've looked

How the scaled-down scheme could look

Plans for one of the tallest towers in the East Midlands have been scrapped following a major U-turn by developers.

The initial £100m plans by developer MRP included a two-phase scheme on Queens Road, next to Nottingham Railway Station, incorporating a purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) building with 406 beds, and two buildings containing a total of 238 Build to Rent (BTR) apartments – one of which would reach 22 storeys in height.

In October, Nottingham City Council’s planning committee unanimously voted to defer a decision on the scheme to a future meeting, subject to further consideration of architecture, form, design decoration and “the contribution to the Nottingham skyline.”

Now, MRP has decided to stall plans for both the tower and the BTR elements of the scheme, and concentrate solely on the 406 student flats.

The removal of the two BTR buildings (phase 2 of the scheme) will allow phase 1 to move forward whilst a more detailed review of the design for these buildings, and the London Road Tower in particular, is carried out to address the concerns raised by committee.

It is thought that MRP will submit a new planning application for phase 2 in early 2023.

The scaled-down scheme has been given the nod by planning officers at Nottingham City Council before it goes before the planning committee next Wednesday (December 21)
