The demolition of Leicester Market has started, paving the way for its multimillion-pound regeneration.

The old wooden trading stalls and the 1990s roof are set to be removed and replaced.

In their place, Leicester City Council plans to install 84 new modern stalls, creating a more inviting environment for local businesses.

The council also aims to improve pedestrian pathways with a redesigned stall layout.

A smaller covered area will be constructed at the centre of the market space, providing clear views of the historic Corn Exchange building.

New units will be installed in front of the current meat and fish market area, offering both attractiveness and security. Upgrades to lighting, paving, and perimeter security will enhance safety and modernise the market.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: “This investment in Leicester Market is long overdue, so I’m very pleased that our contractors are now on site. If Leicester Market is to be the beating heart of the city centre once again, we need to help it adapt to reflect the way that people shop today. By reconfiguring the space and upgrading the environment, we can create new opportunities for new businesses that will complement the existing offer and attract new activity, and new life, to the market area.”
