£20m town centre revamp planned for Bulwell

Residents in Bulwell are getting a glimpse of plans to transform the town centre, as updated proposals are shared for a £20m improvement project backed by government funding.

Nottingham City Council secured £19.8m from the third round of the Government’s Levelling Up funding scheme in November 2023, following an earlier unsuccessful bid.

The improvements will include a redesign of the Bulwell Bogs area, with expanded splash park facilities, new landscaping, and the addition of a kiosk with toilets and changing spaces.

Lighting and CCTV in the park will also be upgraded.

The town’s Market Place is also set for refurbishment, with new stalls and improved power access intended to encourage a mix of new and existing vendors. Public toilets at the bus station will be rebuilt and modernised.

Elsewhere, paving across pedestrianised areas will be renewed, and new seating and street trees introduced. The council also plans to improve links between the Market Place and Bulwell Bogs.

A longer-term goal, if budgets allow, is to work with property owners to restore some of the historic buildings around the Market Place in line with conservation guidelines.

Councillor Neghat Khan, Leader of Nottingham City Council and Executive Member for Strategic Regeneration, Transport and Communications said: “These are further exciting plans for Nottingham and another example of the council using grant funding to support communities across our city.

“We did well to secure this money amid a lot of competition from around the country and we hope that residents, families and businesses in Bulwell will be pleased at what is delivered. The much-loved Bulwell Bogs splash park is nearing the end of its life and this is an opportunity to both build on its popularity and safeguard its future with a new and enhanced facility, as well as extend the park around it.

“There will also be significant work done to the wider public areas of Bulwell, including the market square and public toilets. We look forward to work starting in the autumn. We deliberately scheduled the works for this time of the year so that the splash park could remain open during the summer for families to enjoy. The market will also operate throughout.”

The works are expected to begin in autumn 2025.
