MMU seeks contractor for Birley Fields

MANCHESTER Metropolitan University (MMU) has started its search for a contractor to handle the construction of its new campus in Hulme.

The £120m project includes 230,000 sq ft of new academic buildings and extensive public realm works at the 12-acre Birley Fields site, according to a tender document.

It will also feature an energy centre which will serve the site and help it to become the “greenest” university campus in the country.

It is aiming to achieve a neutral carbon footprint, water self-sufficiency and no off-site waste disposal.

The development, which will serve 6,000 students, is part of an MMU plan to consolidate its operations on to two campuses, down from seven.

It should be finished and occupied by 2014. Manchester architect John McAslan + Partners has drawn up the strategic development framework for the scheme.
