Edelson looks for hometown App-rentice

RENOWNED investor Michael Edelson, who was dubbed the ‘shellmeister’ in financial circles after floating a number of firms on AIM, is seeking to inspire the next generation of digital entrepreneurs in his hometown, Oldham.

Although now based in south Manchester Mr Edelson is backing an initiative launched by Oldham Council and the town’s Business Leadership Group to inspire secondary school pupils to invent a mobile app.

Called ‘Oldham’s App-rentice’  the competition is open to young people age 14 to 19.

The winner will receive an  iPad 2 – presented and signed by Oldham-born Manchester United star Paul Scholes – as well as a masterclass given by app experts and developers, Stockport-based FundedApps.

Mr Edelson said:  “Many children, some of whom may struggle with traditional academic subjects, find real inspiration in invention.

“That’s why it’s so important that they’re encouraged to explore the world of innovation from an early age.  Oldham’s App-rentice gives them a fantastic opportunity to do this, in a competitive arena.”

Jamie Lyons, executive director at FundedApps – which is chaired by Mr Edelson – added: “Mobile technology has really taken off so we were eager to develop a competition which encouraged the next generation to explore this growing industry.

“FundedApps, at its core, is a highly innovative company, so it’ll be great to see the kids getting excited about developing something highly original. We’re looking forward to seeing the entries roll in!”
