Region’s roll call in New Year Honours

THE University of Manchester’s Nobel Prize winning scientists,  Professors Andre Konstantin Geim and Konstantin Novoselov led the way in the New Year’s Honours list with knighthoods.

The duo, both professors of physics, received the highest honour for services to science after their Nobel Prize success last year.

Elsewhere, John Syvret the boss of Cammell Laird,the Birkenhead-based ship building group and Martin Douglas, president of Greater Manchester Chamber and Eddie Davies, the Isle of Man-based owner of Bolton Wanderers FC, were among the prominent business people honoured.

Receiviing CBEs were: Cheshire-based Denise Coates, founder and chief executive of bet365 for services to business and charity; Edwin Davies for charitable services; industrialist and investor Bill Holroyd  for services to children and community in the North West and John Syvret  for  services to maritime sector.

Receiving OBEs are: Wigan-based Melanie Bryan, founder of Whynotchange – for services to social and women’s enterprise in the North West;  Martin Douglas, general manager  of Cargill UK, for services to industry in the region; broadcaster Stuart Hall, for services to charity and broadcasting  and Amanda Thompson, managing director of Blackpool Pleasure Beach – for services to the leisure industry.

The MBEs are: Barrow in Furness-based Philip Burns, an engineering manager at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions, for services to defence industry; Bentley director and Cheshire LEP chair Christine Gaskell, from Altrincham,  for services to training and apprenticeships and Anwer Patel, managing director of Cohen Chemist Group, which is based in Bolton, for services to community pharmacy.
