MMU seeks consent for 1,100 student rooms

COUNCILLORS in Manchester will today consider Manchester Metropolitan University’s plan to build accommodation for more than 1,100 students in Hulme.
The development is part of the university’s new Birley Fields campus where work is already underway on 250,000 sq ft of academic buildings.
Outline permission has already been granted for five accommodation blocks. The council’s planning committee will now consider a reserved matters application detailing the 1,171 bedrooms that are proposed in a series of town houses and flats.
The buildings will be a mix of four and six-storey blocks which will also have around 46,000 sq ft in leisure and retail space.
Council planning officers have recommended the application is approved.
