Premier Inn books in at New Bailey scheme

FAST-expanding budget hotel brand Premier Inn is to open  a 143-bedroom hotel and restaurant on the Manchester/Salford border.

The leisure business will be the first occupier in phase one of the New Bailey development, which is part of the ambitious £650m Salford Central scheme.

Construction in the £12.5m hotel development will begin next month. The site is close to Manchester city centre – at the bottom of New Quay Street, which becomes Irwell Street, and the corner of Stanley Street.

The new hotel and restaurant will support the occupiers of the planned Grade A office and commercial properties at New Bailey.

This first phase at New Bailey will create approximately 50 new jobs.

Phil Mayall, development director at English Cities Fund – a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal & General Property and The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) – said: “This announcement is a great boost to the scheme. New Bailey will be the commercial quarter at the heart of the Salford Central development and the new Premier Inn will sit very well in supporting this.

“With the planning application now approved, and agreement with Premier Inn finalised, we are looking forward to work beginning on site.”

Salford’s assistant mayor for planning, Councillor Derek Antrobus, said: “The New Bailey development is a key part of Salford’s growth. The new investment provided by Premier Inn is a welcome boost to the local economy.”

Nick Johnston, acquisition manager for Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, added: “We currently have five Premier Inn hotels in central Manchester and the New Bailey scheme adds another excellent location for our customers in the west of the city centre.  It’s a great location for us and our strong brand and covenant will help to make the overall development a real success.”

ECf is in talks with a building contractor to deliver the project. The hotel has been designed by RHWL Architects.
