Cumbrian pig farm goes to market after insolvency

A FAMILY-owned pig farming business with sales of nearly £40m, has fallen into administration.

Dent Ltd of Greengill, Penrith in Cumbria is a supplier of bacon and pork products to supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s. It has around 20,000 pigs and employs 67 people.

Deloitte partners Adrian Berry and Clare Boardman were were appointed joint administrators of the company on December 2 amid difficult trading.

Dent is one of the largest outdoor reared pig producers in the UK supported by third party growers across the North of England and the Midlands.

Joint administrator Adrian Berry said: “We will liaise closely with the company’s customers and will work with management and the contract famers to ensure the highest standards of animal welfare are maintained.

“The business will continue to trade and a sale process undertaken, and no redundancies are planned at this stage.”

Other parts of the Dent family’s business, a dairy processor called North Lakes Foods and a haulage business are not affected by the pig business insolvency.
