JMW wins case for actress Michelle Keegan

MANCHESTER law firm JMW, acting for Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan, has secured substantial damages from a national newspaper after it falsely claimed that she had Tweeted about products in exchange for expensive gifts.
The story, which ran on the front page of the Daily Mirror in July 2013, with the headline “Corrie Stars Caught in TV Sting”, claimed Miss Keegan had attended a staged celebrity “gifting suite” and Tweeted about bogus products in exchange.
In fact, she did not attend the event and was not involved in any way. Celebrity endorsements on Twitter are covered by the CAP Advertising Code and fair trading laws.
The newspaper has apologised for its mistake, published an apology and paid substantial damages.
Miss Keegan’s lawyer, Nick McAleenan of JMW Solicitors, said: “The Daily Mirror’s story wrongly accused Michelle of behaving badly at a gifting event and misleading fans on Twitter.
“The newspaper has now rightly apologised for its story and paid Michelle substantial damages. Michelle has successfully cleared her name and can now put this unfortunate episode behind her.”
A spokeswoman for Michelle Keegan added: “Michelle is pleased that The Daily Mirror has now apologised for the story. It was important for Michelle to set the record straight, and this has now been achieved.”
