Liquidator appointed to Mersey dockers’ guild

AN organisation set up in 1937 to give financial help to injured or unwell Liverpool dockers, has been put into liquidation.

The Mersey Docks Board Staff Guild has appointed Matt Dunham, restructuring and recovery partner at Smith & Williamson, the accountancy firm, as solvent liquidator.

Mr Dunham said: “The directors have taken the decision to wind-up the company as its role has been superceded by changes seen with the docks, and its ownership, in recent years. The need for the guild has now reached a natural conclusion.”

The guild’s assets, including holiday homes in the Lake District as well as North and South Wales, have been sold and the proceeds will be distributed to the remaining guild members by the liquidator.

Mr Dunham added: “I am sure there are still many people around Merseyside who will look fondly upon the guild. It may be closing but the guild should always be remembered for its integral role in the welfare of dock workers and their families, particularly when they faced personal challenges,” he added.

The body has around 100 active members and 120 retired pensioners. Mr Dunham said all will receive a distribution from the assets.
