Madchester star joins new college

ONE of the stars of ‘Madchester era’, Inspiral Carpets singer Clint Boon, has become a patron of a new music college that has opened in the city.

Boon, who these days combines his music with work as a radio DJ, will help the new Access to Music facility on Oxford Road – which is based on the site of the former Jilly’s Rockworld club – identify and nurture new talent.

The £1m centre at Bruntwood’s St James’ Buildings, is training over 150 students on a range of courses including music performance, music technology and music business – with creative media being launched in September 2015.

Chief executive Adrian Armstrong, said: “It’s fantastic to have Clint on board as a patron for our Manchester centre. He has had and still has an amazing music career and actively champions new talent through his work at XFM, so it’s great for our students to know we have such an inspirational role model working with us.”

Clint Boon added: “It’s brilliant to see a building that had such a rich musical heritage, transformed into a state-of-the-art training centre, where new generations of talent from the North West can craft their musical skills. I was flattered to be asked to be a patron and I’m looking forward to working with the guys and seeing what new talent emerges.”

Established in 1992, Access to Music provides a wide choice of courses covering all aspects of the music industry; a curriculum developed in partnership with Rockschool, the UK’s only popular music awarding body. To date, the college has trained thousands of performers and producers, including BRIT award-winning Ed Sheeran and Rita Ora.
