Beer launched to celebrate pro-EU city

A POLITICALLY-aware beer company is being launched to celebrate Liverpool’s vote to remain in the European Union, despite the national Brexit vote.
The brewers behind the Republic of Liverpool brand are supporting their city’s 58% majority vote to stay by developing a product to mark the historical event- and they want you to name it.
The company was set up by director Tony Rothwell in response to Brexit and his belief that Liverpool should become a republic.
Rothwell, owner of Stamps microbrewery, in Boundary Street, Everton is dubious about the Northern Powerhouse and future funding for the city, believing politicians are only paying lip service to say what people want to hear.
One disappointment he faced was when his funding application for an open poetry night was rejected, which he believes is an example of unequal arts funding due to the North-South divide.
He transformed this set-back and his eagerness to distance himself from the London’s political elite into the idea for a new series of ‘rebel beers with a Mersey-centric political message’.
Rothwell said: “Liverpool is still the only rebellious city in the country.
“The Republic of Liverpool beer company is appealing to Scousers everywhere to get involved by helping to name our beers and together we can raise a toast as we face the future together.
“Liverpool is famed for its friendliness and our doors have always been open to people from all across the world.”
“Many people share our dream of becoming a republic which may now not be as ridiculous as it once seemed.”
There has already been around 40 name suggestions for the new beers after a social media campaign was launched to encourage people everywhere to get involved.
