Umbro confirms new HQ but tempers jobs hopes

UMBRO, the US-owned sports giant, has confirmed plans to move to new North West location, but clarified reports this will double the size of its workforce.

The historic Cheshire company, which makes the England football team kit, said a number of new jobs would be created over the next decade, but said a reported figure of 220 was not right.

Umbro said it had signed a 10-year lease for a headquarters building. The move increases its space by 5,000 sq ft to 37,000 sq ft.

The building is in the new Lakeside 5000 building in Cheadle Royal business park. Umbro’s headquarters is currently based in a building on the same location.

Umbro, founded in Wilmslow in 1924, currently employs 199 people.

A statement said: “While Umbro is fully committed to Stockport and anticipates growth, headcount increases are expected to be incremental. News reports indicating Umbro is adding 220 new jobs with this lease extension are not correct and don’t reflect actual growth plans.”
