Merepark sets sights on Liverpool hotel

ALTRINCHAM developer Merepark is planning to add another hotel to Liverpool city centre.

It is seeking approval to turn a five-storey 1960s concrete-framed building in the Castle Street conservation area into a 108-bedroom hotel with retail and leisure space in the basement.

The 7,000 sq ft site on Crosshall St, known as the Tinlings Building, is empty but was previously used for offices.

A council report prepared ahead of a meeting on Tuesday, December 7, said it will be a budget hotel but no operator is named. Councillors have been advised to approve the scheme which officers say will re-invigorate this part of the conservation area and attract more business and tourism.

“The proposal will contribute towards a sustainable mix of uses, in an accessible location, benefiting the local economy and providing enhanced employment prospects,” said the report.

“The proposed development will bring the existing building back into viable uses in addition to the alterations to the external elevations element making a positive contribution to the local townscape, thereby, preserving and enhancing the historic character and setting of the application site and the surrounding Castle Street conservation area and World Heritage Site.”

A spokesperson for Merepark said terms had been agreed with a hotel operator but would not say who it was.
