Wind power group to slash jobs

WIND energy group Vestas has announced it is to cut more than half its UK jobs after hitting too many planning obstacles.

Vestas, the world’s biggest maker of wind turbines, employs 1,100 staff in the UK, with 217 at Vestas Northern Europe in Warrington.

The office handles sales, installation and service of Vestas wind turbines in the UK.

Chief executive Ditlev Engel told the Financial Times that the group was attracted to the UK’s commitment to wind power but it was “probably one of the most difficult places in the world to get permission [for wind projects]”.

The weaker pound had also made it more expensive to make turbines at its factory in the Isle of Wight because nearly all the parts are imported. The blades are the single component Vestas makes in the UK.
