Mail order firm rapped over catalogue claims

MANCHESTER mail order firm JD Williams has been rapped by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) following a complaint about claims made in one of its catalogues.

The ASA upheld claims made about two products in a House of Bath-branded catalogue distributed by the firm.

One ad for a product known as a Travel Circulation Machine stated that it could “improve the circulation in your legs as you travel”.

It said the machine could help to improve the blood flow in legs, rejuvenate tired feet and was “especially useful on long flights the help reduce the risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis)…”

A second ad for a pair of gloves claimed they had been “developed to relieve arthritic hands and carpal tunnel syndrome”.

A company, part of listed home shoppong group N Brown,  called High Tech Health Ltd challenged whether claims for either product could be substantiated. JD Williams did not defend the claims but instead said that it was prepared to remove them and provided suggested amended copy.

The ASA said the claims were misleading and said the firm should “ensure they held robust substantiaton” before making future product claims.
