Consultancy launches with gas monitoring technology

A CONSULTANCY business for the construction sector has been launched on the back of new technology that monitors ground-gases on brownfield and former landfill sites.

Ground-Gas Solutions, based at Manchester Science Park, was set up by environmental specialist Simon Talbot to provide a continuous ground-gas data capture and analysis consultancy service to clients in both the public and private sectors.

The company is the only consultancy in the UK to have an array of Gasclams, the technology which enables continuous monitoring of gases in the ground, according to Mr Talbot.

Gasclam was developed by University of Manchester spin-off company Salamander last year. By collecting continuous data, the Gasclam provides a more realistic prediction of ground-gas risk, allowing for cost effective, focused remediation.

Mr Talbot said: “The Gasclam fits inside a standard 50mm borehole where it can remain safely in the ground monitoring gases such as methane and carbon dioxide and a range of other environmental parameters.

“Research has shown that continuous, high-frequency ground-gas monitoring overcomes much of the difficulty often associated with conventional ground-gas data acquisition, which is sporadic and characterised by poor temporal resolution.”
