Advisers toast Cumbria waste deal

LAW firm Dickinson Dees advised Cumbria County Council on its recent £720m waste management deal.
Under the 25-year project Cumbria has appointed the Shanks Group as its waste management partner in a move which will see much of the county’s waste sent to mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plants.
The contract also includes the development of two MBT plants with a combined capacity of 150,000 tonnes per year, taking into account future population growth in the county during the term of the contract.
The 11-strong team from Dickinson Dees, including expertise drawn from across its projects, environment and safety, corporate, planning and property departments, advised the council on the completion of this pivotal scheme.
Nigel Christian, assistant head of waste management at Cumbria County Council commented: “We are absolutely delighted to have secured this contract which will truly revolutionise waste disposal in Cumbria. We will now have a cost-effective system for dealing with waste for many years to come.
