Indian life sciences firm plans Manchester expansion

AN Indian biotech firm is planning to take on 10 people over the next 18 months at its new office at Manchester Science Parks’ (MSP) main campus near the university.

Bio-Analytical Technologies, which has its head office in Pune near Mumbai, develops software for the life sciences and biotech sectors.

It was introduced to the MSP through a ‘soft landing’ scheme managed by inward investment agency MIDAS and has now taken a full office at the park led by Anand Maiskar, associate vice president for the UK and Europe.

He said: “We chose Manchester because we had had some customers in the North West so we wanted to open in the UK but UK Trade & Investment and the North West Regional Development Agency made a very good case.”

The firm’s presence adds to a growing life sciences sector in Manchester which includes Qiagen – also at the science park – Epistem and Gen-Probe. Bio-Analytical Technologies, a private firm with around 200 staff, plans to use the base to expand its UK client list.

Hosting firm Bytemark has also taken more space along with IT company Teneo and pharmaceutical equipment supplier T&H Systems.

Lynne Barlow, MSP commercial director, said: “This has been a great start to 2011 and we are pleased that MSP’s flexible lease terms, scalable office and laboratory space and added-value services mean that we continue to be a popular location for companies looking to integrate into a dynamic, innovation-based community.”
