Plans for 175-unit housing scheme in Eccles approved

Arndale Properties Management has been granted approval to build 175 new homes on the site of the former GUS Warehouse in Eccles.

The firm has been given outline approval to build the homes on a derelict industrial site alongside the Bridgewater Canal – for which a £53m masterplan has recently been developed.

Cllr Paula Boshell, who represents the Winton Ward in which the houses would be based, said the scheme would reopen part of the canal which had previously been blocked by the industrial site.

The development was also welcomed by Sky Properties, which is proposing a controversial Eco Park scheme with a waste-to-energy plant across the canal.

Sky Properties said that the homes could receive heating and power for its proposed plant.

Sky Properties’ Anthony Hirsch said; “The site of the former GUS Home Shopping Warehouse is on the opposite side of the Bridgewater Canal from the proposed Green Lane Eco Park, which has been sensitively designed taking into account the Bridgewater Canal masterplan and aspirations for the Monton area.

“The GUS site redevelopment and other development projects in the vicinity of Green Lane provide significant potential for synergies with the proposed Eco Park through opportunities to maximise the benefits from combined heat and power.”

Sky Properties’ application for its Eco Park will be heard by Salford Council next month.
