Aldi plans new Liverpool shopping centre

SUPERMARKET chain Aldi is leading the redevelopment of a shopping centre in the Liverpool suburb of Childwall.

The German group has submitted planning permission to replace the Gateacre Park centre with a new 30,000 sq ft development.

Agent David Highton of Heald Green-based Higham & Co said outline planning was granted to London-based developer District and Urban Northwest in 2009 but the property was bought by Aldi late last year and it has since submitted a full application.

It wants to demolish the existing buildings and replace them with retail space, including a new Aldi store, and a car park.

Mr Highton said: “We’re redeveloping the site and putting back a more modern version of what’s already there.”

Aldi, which could not be reached for comment, is now looking for a developer to take the scheme forward.

Meanwhile, Aldi is taking 16,000 sq ft at phase two of Ask Development’s new Eden Square development in Urmston town centre. Work on site is expected to commence in summer.

The announcement follows Trafford Council’s approval of the revised phase two plans in October 2010, which provides three larger units aimed at retailers who could not be accommodated in the first phase.
