Declining job market coming to an end

THE North West’s declining job market is coming to an end, according to one North West recruiter that has had a “noticeable upturn” in the last month, since the start of the recession.
Most of 2009 has been characterised by a continuing slump in HR recruitment, but Warrington-based Antal International has said that considerably more companies are seeking new staff in the last month.
Lee Narraway, managing director of Antal International said job volumes reached their lowest during mid June 2009, with an 85% decrease in HR jobs compared with 2008.
He said: “Mid May to mid June signalled the lowest point, where the only positions being recruited for were incredibly specialist; there were very few generalist positions available. However, the last few weeks has seen a marked increase.”
According to Mr Narraway, Antal’s HR desks are now handling more roles than ever since the start of the recession and this is a trend across all the company’s UK offices.
He said: “It is also significant to note that there are a wide variety of firms recruiting, which is a strong indicator the market may no longer be in a downward spiral.
“Another positive note is that salaries have remained competitive and in conversations with firms, we have found that many are now so lean, that with only a small increase in business, they will need to increase their headcount.”
