Morgan Sindall wins £4.6m college contract

CONSTRUCTION firm Morgan Sindall has won a competitive tender to build a new £4.6m Technology Centre for Hopwood Hall college in Rochdale town centre.

The new two-storey, steel-framed building will consist of around 48,000 sq ft of teaching rooms and breakout space.

It will be used to teach trades such as brickwork, carpentry and joinery, as well as electronic engineering and vehicle maintenance. A secure workshop and service yard will also be built.

It has been designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standard of environmental performance, and will feature rainwater recycling, solar hot water systems, natural ventilation and high levels of thermal insulation.

David Watts, senior project manager at Morgan Sindall, said: “Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important issue for the education sector.

“This is an exciting project which will create a fantastic centre of excellence while also enhancing the college’s green credentials.   Work is under way and will be completed in time for the new academic year.”

Saf Arfan, director for corporate services at Hopwood Hall College, said: “This scheme is part of wider £17 million capital investment strategy to enhance both campuses and offer high quality education and training facilities.”
