Matalan’s jobs booster

NORTH West discount clothing and homewaress retailer is recruitmenting 1,800 staff.

The Skelmersdale-based company, is creating 300 jobs at three new stores, including one in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, and is also looking for 1,500 staff for the peak Christmas trading period.

The company, which has 203 stores nationwide, was taken private in 2006 by a company controlled by the family of founder John Hargreaves.

Amin Kassam, retail director of Matalan said: “Customers are continuing to respond well to our strategy of offering fantastic value and we are delighted to be able to create jobs at a time when this is really needed in the UK.”

In March it posted operating profits up 14% to £102m for the year to the end of February and said it was planning to open up to 100 new stores in the next few years.

Mr Hargreaves opened the first Matalan store in Preston in 1985, taking inspiration from low-price, out-of-town retailers in the US. By 1995 there were 50 stores across the UK.
