NWDA innovation chief secures Salford role

The University of Salford has appointed Dr George Baxter, a key figure behind expansion at the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus, as professor of enterprise and innovation.

Dr Baxter, currently director of science and innovation for the North West Regional Development Agency (NWDA), will be responsible for driving forward business partnerships within the university’s business school.

At the NWDA, which will close in March next year, Dr Baxter worked on a regional science and innovation strategy, working with companies such as AstraZeneca, Unilever and British Aerospace, as well as SMEs.

During his time at the NWDA, Daresbury – one of only two national science campuses in the UK – underwent a major expansion and is now home to more than 100 small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

He said: “I have been struck by the enthusiasm and energy of people at the University of Salford, and I am looking forward to embedding a renewed focus on enterprise and innovation within the Salford Business School.

“There are many exciting opportunities to drive this forward – for example, the University’s presence at MediaCityUK will provide valuable relationships with partners that will benefit our students, and help boost the North West economy.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin Hall said: “George’s appointment is a real coup for this University and we look forward to working with such a dynamic and innovative leader.

“In addition to leading on key aspects of enterprise and innovation within the Salford Business School, he will play a key role in realising opportunities for small-to-medium enterprise development, particularly in the media and digital areas – something I am confident that George will excel at.”

Dr Baxter’s role at Salford will include heading the university’s Centre for Enterprise and Innovation. He will take up the position in October.
