Chamber appoints new president

A SALFORD businessman and former cardiac scientist has been appointed as the new president of Greater Manchester Chamber.

Dr Moneeb Awan, managing director of eSAY Mobile, takes over from Peter Heginbotham at the chamber’s annual meeting today.

He said: “By the end of my term as president, I hope to see a platform of sustainable business growth in place, with Greater Manchester businesses leading the way through intelligent deployment of innovative practices.

“As president I will endeavour to ensure that our Chamber promotes real innovation and helps entrepreneurship in the region to flourish.”

Dr Awan launched software business eSAY eight years ago with co-directors Colin Yates and Graham Stanley. Prior to launching eSAY, he held senior research posts at University College London and the University of Cape Town’s Cape Heart Centre.

He added: “My partners and I had a belief that despite the fact none of us had any business experience, we could achieve something. So how has our success come about? And the answer’s pretty simple. Apart from luck the path can be traced back to the day we became members of our Chamber of Commerce. You can’t say what would have happened if we hadn’t joined but what you can say is that by joining we learnt about the true business of business.”

At the Chamber’s building and construction dinner last night city council chief Sir Howard Bernstein said: “I should pay tribute to Peter for all the great work and the tremendous job he has done for the city as president. He has shown great qualities of leadership during the last year.”
