MPs seek talks on Heinz factory

MPs are seeking talks with bosses at food giant Heinz to clarify the future of a factory in Wigan.

The move follows the announcement last week by Pittsburg-based Heinz that it wants to close five factories around the world in a bid to save nearly £100m.

Two of the plants will be axed  Europe – one in Poland and at another un-named location.

MPs Yvonne Fovargue for Ashton in Makerfield and Lisa Nandy for Wigan, say they want to meet Heinz to seek assurances over the future of the Kitt Green factory whihc employs 1,200.

Ms Fovargue said: “As soon as we heard we did ring the Heinz management and ask for a meeting to allay everyone’s concerns.

“We do know that Heinz have made significant investment in the Wigan factory and that they do have a valued and respected workforce there.”

There was industrial action at KItt Green in January amid a row over pay. The factory produces the company’s famouns baked beans as well as soups, pasta meals and baby food.
