Good news coming soon, says airport boss

THE boss of Manchester Airport says good news is “around the corner” after a difficult year for the aviation sector.

Andrew Cornish, managing director, told North West journalists at the airport’s annual media reception that there would be announcements on new routes and services in “the next few weeks and months.”

“They will be really tangible and be good news for Manchester and the North West as a whole.”

Despite the recession – and the airport’s high profile spat over charging with Ryanair which led to the budget airline axing the majority of its flights – Mr Cornish said 2009 had seen some major positives.

“We have invested in our infrastructure and our facilities, and of course won some really important awards, including UK airport of the year at the British Travel Awards for the second year running and also airport of the year at the Trade Travel Gazette awards.”

Mr Cornish said the support of the airports owners – the 12 local authorities of Greater Manchester – and the wider Manchester family had been “tantamount” to the organisation’s success.

Mr Cornish has recently returned from Singapore where he joined Manchester inward investment agency MIDAS to launch a business club for Singapore firms trading with and investing in the city. A similar arrangement in Mumbia will be unveiled in the next few months.
