Tesco plans Barnoldswick store

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco is proposing to build a new supoermarket in the Pennine Lancashire town of Barnoldswick.

The supermarket will be built by developer Liberty Properties on a site currently owned by engineering firm L&P Springs on Skipton Road. Liberty is proposing to redevelop the site and re-house L&P Springs in a move which it said would create 175 jobs as well as safeguarding the future of L&P’s 36 employees.

It is hosting a two-day public exhibition showing off the plans starting from 2pm tomorrow afternoon.

Tesco’s corporate affairs manager, Matthew Magee, said: “This is an exciting development for Barnoldswick and we are looking forward to being able to talk to local residents and community groups about our plans.

“The development will create up to 175 new jobs for the local area, as well as helping to secure the future of a local manufacturing firm through the sale of part of its site.”

L&P Springs’ managing director, Anthony Joyce, said: “This is an important development for the future of L&P Springs in Barnoldswick. We are determined to remain a part of the community in the town.

“The current economic climate has been challenging for all businesses and to have the potential for a major injection in finance is just what the doctor ordered. The supermarket proposals are great news for all of our staff – many of whom live in Barnoldswick”.
