Sale Hotel saved from demolition

THE HISTORIC Sale Hotel on Marsland Road has been granted listed status following a campaign to save the building from demolition.
The building has now been grade II listed, overturning a decision first made by the secretary of state in July 2009 not to list the 130-year-old hotel.
An appeal was lodged by Trafford Council, The Victorian Society, and around 1,500 residents who signed a petition against developer’s plans to demolish the building.
The Sale Hotel is considered to be a building of special architectural and historic interest and a rare surviving reminder of a Victorian recreational complex. It was built in 1878 as part of the Sale Botanical gardens, which included a ballroom, lake, cycle track and grass tennis courts. The Edwardian houses which surround the hotel were built on the former gardens.
Mike Cornes, executive councillor at Trafford Council, said: “The council and residents worked hard to have the initial decision reviewed. We will now be working with the developers to see how this building can now be brought back into active use.”
