Pooches on parade at home for ex-service personnel

Man’s best friend will take centre stage at the Broughton House Spring Fair in Salford this weekend.

The home for ex-servicemen and women will stage its first dog show at the event, with prizes in categories including cutest puppy, best veteran and waggiest tail.

The fair takes place from 1.30pm to 4.30pm on Sunday (April 2) at the home on Park Lane, Broughton Park.

Entry to the fair is free and attractions will include a tombola, raffle, inflatable trampoline, live music, displays of spring plants and bulbs, a barbecue and refreshments.

The cost of entering the dog show is £3 per pet. Judges include Stella Bowdell, director of membership at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Swinton Insurance’s Chris Travis and a veterinary surgeon at Vets4Pets in Prestwich.

Vets4Pets representatives will also give free health checks for dogs.

Companies which have donated prizes, food and drinks or are providing volunteers include Tesco, Robinsons Brewery, Allied Bakeries, Salford Angels Women’s Institute, Park Veterinary Clinic, Batleys, Orchard Rock Training, Village Greens Community Co-op, Carrick Signs and Local Care Force, a nursing, social and healthcare agency.

Ty Platten, chief executive at Broughton House, said the event aims to raise £2,000 as well as providing a fun day out for families and supporters of the home.

He added: “We’re looking forward to a memorable and enjoyable occasion with the addition this year of the dog show.

“We’re also extremely grateful to everyone who has contributed towards making our spring fair a success and raise valuable funds for Broughton House in the process.”
