Up to 140 new homes are set to be built as the redevelopment of a former Liverpool primary school attended by the young Sir Paul McCartney moves into its next phase.

Regeneration specialist Compendium Living – a joint venture by partnership housing developer Lovell and The Riverside Group – has appointed Lovell for the £15.5m scheme.

It is to build up to 114  two, three and four-bedroom homes for open market sale at the former Joseph Williams School site on Naylorsfield Drive, Belle Vale, south-east Liverpool.

Former Beatle Sir Paul went to the school between 1949 and 1953. The school closed in 1997.

Work is already under way by Compendium Living on 16 shared ownership houses and 10 apartments, houses and bungalows for affordable rent for Riverside at the Belle Vale site.

Work on the new homes for sale is set to start soon with the overall housing development scheduled to be complete in 2020.

Significant landscaping and green space are an important part of the scheme and include new footpath links from Viennese Road to Naylorsfield Drive.

In 2015, Lovell successfully completed work on Joseph Williams Mews – a modern retirement living complex built for Riverside – which formed the first phase of the redevelopment of the Joseph Williams School site.

Compendium Living managing director Dave Bullock said: “We are delighted to be embarking on the next phase of our plan to provide high-quality new homes and environments for people who want to make Belle Vale their home.

“Working with Riverside, Lovell and Liverpool City Council over recent years, we are continuing to make a difference in this part of Liverpool.”

Lovell regional director Nigel Yates said: “We’re extremely pleased to be continuing the transformation of this important site with Compendium Living.

“This is a scheme which is delivering major benefits for the Belle Vale community and these proposals will provide the new modern, high-quality homes for rent and for sale for which there is such a pressing need locally.”

Mark Patchitt, director of development and growth at Riverside, said: “I am really pleased that the latest phase of investment in Belle Vale is under way.

“It is another landmark in our long-term investment in Belle Vale. By working with our joint vnture partner Compendium Living, we have been creating new homes and Belle Vale homes have never been in more demand.”

The new homes will feature high-efficiency boilers and will meet the Lifetime Homes Standard, ensuring they can be easily adapted to suit the changing needs of residents.
