Manchester City revealed as region’s top club for Premier League payments

Manchester City has emerged as the North West’s most dominant football club with the highest income from broadcast, commercial income and prize money from their third-place finish in the Premier League in the 2016/17 season.

Funds from the Premier League’s central commercial deals and overseas broadcast rights are shared equally – as is half of the domestic broadcast income. The figures are based on broadcast and commercial deals plus prize money.

A quarter is paid out in prize money based on each club’s league position and the other quarter in “facility fees” for each game broadcast on UK television.

Newly-crowned champions Chelsea also topped the money table with £150.8m and the London domination continued with Tottenham Hotspur second with £145.4m from 25 live matches broadcast.

City were third overall with £146.9m from 28 matches broadcast ahead of Liverpool, fourth, who received £146.1m from 29 screened matches.

Manchester United were sixth (behind Arsenal with £139.6m from 25 matches) with £141.1m from 28 matches followed by Everton, seventh, with £127.8m from 18 matches.

Bottom club Sunderland, who were relegated to the Sky Bet Championship along with Middlesbrough and Hull City, received £93.4m and, overall, the Premier League paid out a total of £2.398bn to its 20 clubs.

The ratio of earning between the highest club (Chelsea) and the lowest club (Sunderland) is 1.61:1 – the lowest in any of Europe’s major leagues.
