5 things to do in the North West

The Open
The Open Championship is returning to the Royal Birkdale in Southport this weekend. The event will see the worlds’ greatest golfers come together to battle it out for the Claret Jug. The competition, which is now in its 146th year, will see Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Phil Mickelson and Ian Poulter compete alongside a whole host of other golfers. Find out more here.

Dark Matter
BBC Radio 6 Music’s Mary Anne Hobbs is bringing Dark Matter to Gorilla and the O2 Ritz in Manchester this weekend as part of Manchester International Festival. Dark Matter is eight shows from national, international and Manchester-based musicians which will take visitors from poetry to jazz, with a whole range of genres in between. Find out more here.

Brazilica Festival
Celebrate Brazilian arts and culture on Saturday with the return of Liverpool’s Brazilica Festival. The event will see 800 performers take part in a carnival parade through the city centre and a whole host of bands and acts will take to the stage across the day. Ironman 2017
The Ironman UK Triathlon takes place this weekend in Bolton. Head along and support the athletes who are competing to be named the very best Ironman in the UK. The course consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.22 mile marathon, all without a break. To cheer them on, you’ll have to get down early as the triathlon begins at 6.30am. Formby Festival
Head along to Formby Festival this weekend for its biggest year yet. The event, that is taking part from Friday until Sunday, will bring together a whole host of food and drink traders, artisan makers and local performers. There will be celebrity chefs, local bands, craft activities to get involved in, as well as archery, paint balling, magic shows, cooking classes and performances from the world’s number one Robbie Williams tribute and a Cilla Black tribute.
