FC United of Manchester – the non-league football club launched by disgruntled Manchester United fans more than a decade ago – has appointed accountancy firm Mitchell Charlesworth in its home city to provide a range of financial and business support services.

The appointment comes at a time when FC United – once dubbed the Rebel Reds – recently won the Manchester Premier Cup for the first time in its history.

The club has kicked off its 13th season this month with 10 new faces on it first team squad.

Founded in 2005, FC United is a community football club owned and democratically run by its 4,001 members.

It is run as a Community Benefit Society, meaning any profits are re-invested. The club is semi-professional and currently plays in the Vanarama National League North.

Mitchell Charlesworth partner Paul Booth said: “We are supporting FC United of Manchester in a number of key areas including the preparation of accounts, tax and VAT.

“Historically, Mitchell Charlesworth has had a strong relationship with the sports sector and this appointment further strengthens our sports sector client base. In addition, we have a lot of community benefit experience which makes us well placed to provide a comprehensive service to the club.

“As a lifelong Manchester United supporter I’m passionate about football and personally delighted to be able to provide business support to the club.”

Damian Chadwick, chief executive of FC United, said: “We’re delighted to appoint Mitchell Charlesworth as club auditors.

“They’re a local company with key sector knowledge, particularly working with sports and not for profit organisations. We look forward to an excellent working relationship that will strengthen the club’s financial and business operations.”
