Gym looks set to be bulldozed for new Lidl store

Controversial plans to replace an existing Lidl store in Wilmslow by knocking down a neighbouring gym will be considered by local councillors next Wednesday (December 6).

The application by Lidl which includes the demolition of the Energie Fitness Club at Summerfield Village Centre will be considered by Cheshire East Council’s northern planning committee.

It is for the erection of a replacement Class A1 retail store, associated car parking and servicing areas, relocation of electricity sub-station, landscaping and associated works following demolition of existing store and fitness club, which currently has 3,000 members.

A report to the committee by planning officers said that it is “evident that there is strong local opposition to the loss of the existing gym”.

Recommending approval without delay, it goes on: “However, it has been demonstrated for the purposes of planning policy that the existing fitness centre is surplus to requirements, given the availability of other indoor leisure facilities in the local area.

“The proposal is also in accordance with local and national retail planning policy. The proposal complies with all relevant policies of the development plan and is therefore a sustainable form of development.”

A 600-name petition has been presented to the council objecting to the demolition of the gym and local MP Esther McVey has weighed in expressing concern.
