Plans approved for £12m development in Cumbria

Plans for a £12m scheme of 26 new homes and community facilities in the village of Lamplugh, Cumbria have been given the go ahead by Copeland Borough Council.

The scheme, designed by Altrincham-based Calderpeel Architects on behalf of John Swift Homes Ltd, will see a mix of traditional family homes built alongside a community village hall, pavilion and formal green.

Situated on a prominent crossroads the 4.5-acre site, which runs alongside a mill conversion, is currently a Cumbrian greenfield site and is used as agricultural land.

The development will vary in size and cater for a broad range of households. A group of six terraced homes along the eastern end of the site will offer three bedrooms set in 1,250sq ft and looking over a village pond.

The northern edge of the development will be home to eight detached and semi-detached homes boasting three and four bedrooms, each between 1,450sq ft and 1,900sq ft.

It’s completed with four bed detached homes sat in 2,000 sq ft overlooking a new village green and a prominently placed farmhouse with a courtyard of barns aiming to recreate a traditional farmyard setting.

Richard Moore, architect at Calderpeel Architects, said: “Lamplugh really is picturesque, so it was important to design the houses to complement their surroundings. The simple palette of materials chosen mirrors the local vernacular and provides a visually interesting informal character.

“We’ve focussed on the needs of modern day living combined with traditional Cumbrian architecture. The houses will all have open plan living areas with private gardens, dressing rooms and retreat rooms which really emphasise the luxury. We’re looking forward to seeing them complete.”

A spokesperson at John Swift Homes, added: “The vision for this development has always centred around creating a heart of the village of Lamplugh while providing a range of much needed quality and sustainable housing in the area.

“This development will provide a space for the residents that embodies their community spirit. Richard and the team at Calderpeel have made our vision a reality and we couldn’t be more excited to get on site. The homes will make the perfect addition to the village, attracting new and downsizing families.”

Calderpeel Architects worked alongside Alpha Design and Barnes Walker. Work is due to start on the development soon.
