Six firms make it on to national league table

Six firms in the North West have made it on to the Sunday Times annual BDO Profit Track 100 league table.

Published this weekend, the 19th annual league table ranks Britain’s private companies with the fastest-growing profits over three years.

The six companies headquartered in the North West – compared with 13 last year – include five new entrants to the league table.

Together they employ 2,900 staff and have achieved combined profits of £74m.

Among the new entrants in the region is online bathroom retailer Victorian Plumbing.

Founded in 1999 by Mark Radcliffe, the Merseyside group now stocks over 10,000 items, has more than one million customers and made profits of £5.6m last year, up by an average of 53 % in one year.

Featuring on the league table for a record seventh time is Carlisle-based Story Homes.

The housebuilder strengthened its land bank during the recession and has been expanding into Scotland, and across the North of England. It grew profits by an average of 61% a year to £26.2m in 2017, when it completed on more than 800 new homes.

The companies in the North West appear with businesses from around the UK, including domestic appliance designer Gtech, sandwich shop chain Pret A Manger, and gym operator PureGym.

Despite cost pressures caused in part by the fall in value of Sterling, all 100 companies increased sales, and average profit margins rose from 8% to 15%.

Ed Dwan, partner in the northwest at BDO, the title sponsor of the league table, said: “These high-growth, high-energy and highly-entrepreneurial companies will be the difference between success and failure in our post-Brexit economic future.

“These businesses are playing their part by recording strong levels of revenue and profit growth and by creating jobs. We’d like to see the Government do more to help them by focusing on skills, infrastructure investment and tax simplification.”
