Mersey Partnership seeks Korea opportunities

THE Mersey Partnership (TMP) has completed a visit to South Korea alongside Wirral Council and Peel Group to promote investment opportunities across the Liverpool city-region.

The trio of organisations sent senior representatives to the capital, Seoul, to spell out available opportunities through projects such as Peel’s proposed new International Trade Centre at Wirral Waters and the city’s low-carbon economy plans, among others.

The visit was instigated following a TMP investment event at the Liverpool Embassy in London event in March, which was attended by the South Korean ambassador and several existing South Korean investors in the UK.

The delegation also met with leading Korean manufacturers including Samsung, Daewoo and Hyundai to generate awareness and interest in Liverpool City Region’s offshore wind energy credentials.

Korean industrial conglomerates are currently seeking to establish their presence in the UK offshore wind market.

TMP chief executive Lorraine Rogers said: “South Korea is one of the world’s leading economies and an increasing source of international investment.

“The Free Trade Agreement between Korea and the UK which came into effect on 1 July 2011 makes this a particularly opportune time to be developing our relationship with South Korean businesses and organisations.

“In meetings with some of South Korea’s leading companies interest was expressed in Liverpool City Region’s investment opportunities and we are now actively following this up.”

Cllr Joe Anderson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said: “It is critical that the region’s investment opportunities are promoted to international markets. The level of interest expressed by these companies at the Liverpool Embassy event was high and this activity marks an important new phase.”
