Manchester is to get another skyscraper

Crown Street

Manchester’s lover affair with skyscrapers is showing no sign of slowing down any time soon.

Planning permission has just been granted for two new towers – one of which will be 51 storeys high.

For the last decade the Betham Tower has been the tallest in the city at 47 storeys high.

But work is currently being carried out on four buildings on Owen Street. The South Tower in the development will eventually reach 64 storeys.

The four towers in the scheme will be 64, 50, 44 and 37 storeys high and contain more than 1,500 flats.

The latest buildings to get approval are at the foot of Princess Parkway and will be built by Renaker – the same firm behind Owen Street.

Rachel Poole, Assistant Director at Deloitte Real Estate, said: “The Crown Street proposals will develop a strategic site in one of Manchester’s key regeneration areas.

“The area is witnessing a complete transformation and the redevelopment of the site will help to connect communities in the City Centre, Castlefield and Hulme.

“There are a number of existing and proposed tall buildings in this part of the city centre and the proposal for two tall, high quality buildings would add to the cluster of tall buildings in this area creating a distinctive, varied and exciting skyline.”

She added: “The proposal reflects Renaker’s commitment to the city. Renaker has an outstanding track record of delivery including most recently the adjacent Deansgate Square development.

“Renaker is due to start on site at Crown Street later this summer adding an impressive addition to the city’s skyline.”

The tallest building will be 67-storey Trinity Islands block, off Liverpool Road, close to the old Granada Studios.

Plans were approved by Manchester council last yeat with construction due to start later this year.

A 52-storey, 168m-high skyscraper is also being built as part of the St John’s Development.
