CPUK civils division on rise with £2.75m triple order

CPUK civils on site at Rochdale

A triple contract win has boosted the order book of one of Skelmersdale-based civils and remediation firm Construction Partnership UK (CPUK).

It has seen its specialist site preparation and demolition team grow year-on-year since it was formed by industry veteran Jack Rowley in 2014.

Three new contract wins awarded by Urban Splash, Homes England and Willmott Dixon and Genr8 have given CPUK civils and remediation its biggest workload in four years.

The specialised division’s annual turnover is now more than £5m and is successfully supporting the existing work CPUK carries out across the UK.

In Rochdale an £850,000 contract is under way on phase one of the remediation and site-wide enabling package for the major 200,000 sq ft retail and leisure redevelopment of the town centre at Rochdale Riverside.

CPUK civils and remediation managing director Jack Rowley said: “Work has begun with the site clearance for the breaking and crushing of surfacing and concrete slabs and the removal of relic foundations to a depth of three or four metres in places.

“We’ve dealt with asbestos and hydrocarbon contamination of soils and are re-engineering the site to mitigate piling while working around the existing main contractor.”

In Birmingham, a contract is enabling work to begin on the ambitious canalside housing regeneration project, Port Loop.

Working with the project partners Urban Splash, Place for People, Birmingham City Council and the Canal and River Trust, CPUK civils and remediation is in charge of the design, construction and completion of civil engineering works to enable phase one to go ahead.

More than 200 family homes are set to be built, along with green infrastructure including a new public park, public open spaces, communal gardens and canal-side public realm.

Mr Rowley said: “Our scope of works includes demolition, site remediation of contaminated soils, canal wall improvements and restoration.

“We started with ground testing and canal wall inspections, followed by site vegetation clearance so we could install the limpet dam in the canal.

“We will be following up with drainage connection and highways works in preparation for Urban Splash and Place for People to begin building this significant new residential development in Birmingham city centre.”

Another residential development will go ahead in Cannock after CPUK civils and remediation completes a £325,000 contract with Homes England to clean up former industrial land in Walkmill Lane.

Up to 116 new homes are set to be built on the site of the former Parker Hannifin manufacturing plant covering an area of approximately 3.25 hectares.

Mr Rowley said: “Work begins with the removal of existing vegetation and will continue with the removal and treatment of all asbestos contaminated materials and the remediation of any hydrocarbon and volatile organic compounds (VOC) impacted soils.

“We will be excavating and re-compacting ground levels down to three metres for the removal of foundations.

“The crushing and screening of all brick and concrete arisings, floor slabs, asphalt and retaining walls will enable the materials to be reused on the site.”

Karl Tupling, general manager for the Midlands for Homes England, said: “At Homes England we use our land, finance and expertise to speed up the delivery of new homes. We’re really pleased to be helping to bring this local site back into use to help local people in Cannock gain access to a home of their own.”
