CBI appoints new North West chair

Ian Funnell

Ian Funnell has been appointed as the new North West chair of the UK’s largest business group, taking over from Marnie Millard, chief executive of drinks maker, Newton-le-Willows based Nichols, in January 2019.

Ian is chief executive of ABB UK, a pioneering technology company that works closely with utility, industry, transportation and infrastructure customers.

Ian was appointed to his current role in January 2015, following a long and distinguished career in the global energy sector.

He is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology.

Ian is currently a member of the CBI President’s Committee and a member of the advisory boards of Innovate UK (Energy Revolution) and Imperial College London (Energy Futures Laboratory).

He is also a member of the Government’s Made Smarter Commission and its North West Pilot Steering Board. He will join as a member of the CBI’s North West regional council.

Ian said: “I am delighted to be taking on this leadership role for the North West region of the UK’s premier business organisation.

“This is a significant period for businesses in the North West, with the region’s industrial strategy being implemented and the Made Smarter sector deal for manufacturers being piloted.

“I look forward to working with businesses across the North West to continue to drive performance forward during this critical phase.”

Damian Waters, CBI North West director, said: “I’m thrilled that Ian is joining the CBI’s North West team.

“His wealth of experience will no doubt help us to create the best possible conditions for the region’s economy and our members. I look forward to working closely with Ian to achieve this.”
