Drivers warned to avoid M6 following serious crash

Drivers are being warned to expect major delays in Cheshire this morning following a crash on the M6.

The motorway has been closed northbound between junction 17 at Crewe and junction 18 for Middlewich after the crash which involving several vehicles late on Monday night.

The accident has taken place on one of the busiest stretches of the motorway and in the middle of long-running roadworks.

The accident, which has been described as serious, led to a large diesel fuel spillage across the motorway.

Police officers and emergency have been at the scene since the crash which took place around 10.30pm.

Highways England said: “The M6 in Cheshire is closed northbound between J17 and J18 due to a multi-vehicle collision and a large diesel spillage across the carriageway.

“Recovery contractors and road engineers are on scene and working to get the lanes open as soon as it is safe.

“Please allow extra time for your journey should you be travelling in the area this morning.”A diversion is in place and are advising motorists to follow the ‘solid diamond’ symbol.

A spokesman for  North West Motorway Police said: “The M6 northbound between junction 17 and junction 18 remains closed following an earlier RTC.

“All trapped traffic has been released, Highways England road engineers are working hard to assess when the carriageway can be re-opened.

“Please consider alternative routes as traffic is starting to build on the northbound M6.”

Motorists at the scene have reported a large number of emergency vehicles including fire engines and recovery vehicles at the scene.
