£100m retail and leisure scheme planned for Liverpool waterfront

A £100m development scheme in Liverpool is being planned by a multi-millionaire businessman from the city.

Developer Nikal, which was set up by entrepreneur Alan Murphy, has purchased a one acre site in the King’s Dock area of Liverpool.

The deal is part of a joint venture with the Addy Consultancy and the plan is to deliver a £100m mixed-use, leisure led development.

The brownfield site, which is in a prime position on King’s Dock Street, will be the first of several Liverpool acquisitions by Nikal.

Alan Murphy said: “I’ve waited many years for the opportunity to deliver a development in my home city and now is the perfect time, both for us as a business but also in light of the regeneration underway at King’s Dock and along Liverpool’s waterfront as a whole.

“I’m immensely proud of being born and raised in Liverpool; I love the city, its culture and its people.

“I’m looking forward to helping contribute to its worldwide appeal with well designed mixed-use developments that will encourage tourism, generate jobs and create inspiring spaces for people to live and thrive.”

Nikal was introduced to the site by regeneration champion Bill Addy, founder of The Addy Consultancy.

He said: “I’ve known Alan and Nick Payne, (Nikal Co-Founder) for a long time and have a huge admiration for their approach to high quality, considered regeneration and placemaking.

“I’m really pleased that we now have a site that will bring our two businesses together and marry our mutual passion and vision, it will be a fantastic addition to the King’s Dock offering.

“We are keen to get going on what will hopefully be the first of many.”

Formed in 2003, by Alan Murphy and Nick Payne, Nikal is a privately-held limited company with offices in Manchester, Birmingham and London.

The firm specialises in large-scale, mixed-use regeneration schemes on strategically-placed brownfield sites across the UK and beyond.

Alan started his working life at Pergamon Press in 1966 progressing through the ranks to become manager of the firm’s Irish division just two years later.

After spells with Carnation Foods and then Gillette in the late 1970’s he launched a supermarket brand at a time when consumers wanted a new one-stop way to shop and opened a chain of hair salons just as ‘punk’ evolved into style-obsessed ‘glam rock’ and ‘new romanticism’.

Both businesses were built up and sold on.

In 1983 Alan established AM Paper Converters, a business also founded on new thinking; turning recycled tissue into toilet paper.

Employing over 600 staff and firmly positioned as one of the region’s outstanding industrial success stories, Alan sold AM Paper Group in two tranches in 1997 and 1999 establishing a substantial personal fortune.

Since then, amongst many other diverse interests, Alan co-founded Nikal in 2003 and has been a consistent supporter of the company both financially and through strategic planning input at board level.

He is also a lifelong supporter of Liverpool FC.

Following a 40 year career in the construction industry, working across all sectors, Bill Addy founded the Addy Consultancy in 2011 and since then has grown its client base – delivering projects for Premier League football teams, social housing groups, sports retailers, premium student accommodation developers and operators, local authorities and regeneration organisations.

As well as being the founding director, Bill Addy is chief executive of the Liverpool BID Company,

Chair of The BID Foundation and Chair of The Liverpool Visitor Economy Network and, to provide balance to Alan Murphy, an Evertonian.
