Pioneering Preston puts itself on the iPhone map

PRESTON has launched a pioneering new application for the iPhone.

It has become the first city in Britain to provide visitors with a free application which guides them on a tour of its blue plaque sites.

The application, which can be downloaded, takes visitors on a virtual tour to find out more about its famous residents like Benjamin Franklin and Richard Arkwright.

It uses photographs, audio clips and an online map to highlight the blue plaque sites in and around the city.

The new technology has been developed in partnership with Preston City Council, the University of Central Lancashire, research organisation JISC and Preston and South Ribble Civic Trust.

Councillor Ken Hudson, leader of Preston City Council, said: “Once again Preston is at the forefront of new technology and I am delighted the city is embracing and pioneering its use.

“Millions of people around the world are now using iPhone, iPod, and mobile phones to access the internet to get video, audio, maps and a whole host of money and time saving applications.”

Phil Holifield, spokesman for the University of Central Lancashire, said:“We were the first University in the country to have its own iPhone application to help students find their way around campus and make the most of everything we have to offer.

“We’re delighted to have worked on this application for the city as Preston has so much history to share.

“From a founding father of the USA, to the birth of the industrial revolution and even the suffragettes, Preston has many interesting stories to tell and this technology is just perfect to showcase it. We hope people download and enjoy making use of the application to find out more about Preston.”
