£26m Castlefield residential scheme nears completion
A £26m residential scheme in Castlefield is nearing completion.
Mulbury’s scheme has now officially topped out.
The eight-storey development of 108 apartments is on the site of the former Excelsior Mill printing and book-binding works off Hulme Hall Road next to the Bridgewater canal.
Representatives from Mulbury, main contractor GMI Construction and frame contractor Cidon Construction, were joined by other members of the project team to pour the final section of concrete.
The apartments are due to be completed in December 2019. Aimed at owner-occupiers, 40% of the apartments have already been sold.
Nick Leggett, senior development manager at Mulbury City, said: “It’s been amazing to see this development taking shape on what was one of the last vacant sites in this part of Castlefield.
“It’s going to reinvigorate this stretch of the canal, providing inspiring hi-specification apartments, just a seven-minute walk from the city centre.
“Topping out is an important ceremonial milestone, but we’re now moving on apace and hope to have the show apartments ready by the end of July. This will coincide with our full UK sales launch targeting owner-occupiers.”
Marc Banks, divisional managing director at GMI Construction Group, said: “Thanks to great collaboration and the efforts of the team and our supply chain partners, we have reached this milestone on schedule and the project is on track for its completion date.”
Designed by Tim Groom Architects, the development offers a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments.
Many of the spacious apartments have balconies, as well as access to a stunning roof garden and other communal areas, while basement parking will also be available.
Excelsior Mill, which formerly occupied the site, was one of the largest book binding works in the UK and employed hundreds of workers.
The mill had been unoccupied for many years and had to be demolished in 2015 following a partial collapse of the structure.
Other members of the project team for the development include Deloitte as planning consultant; Ramboll as structural and civil engineers; RLB as cost consultant and employers’ agent; Futureserv as mechanical and electrical services; Youth interior design; Open as landscape designer; Rawlings as principal designer, Grey Scanlan Hill as rights of light and party wall adviser; SK Transport as transport consultant; and DBX as acoustics consultant.
